The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Song

This latest animated series, the newest animated series by Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will love its inclusion.

Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.

Naturally, the creators has stated that the series will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
