The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th installment, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part season written by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."

The last series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to tackle corruption within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the background, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of season six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
