Russian President Vladimir Putin Vows Uninterrupted Crude Oil Shipments to the Indian Nation in Snub of US Sanctions

In a unambiguous statement to the West, President Vladimir Putin informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to maintain “unbroken” supplies of energy resources to India. The announcement came during a summit where both heads of state met in the Indian capital and declared their relationship were “resilient to outside influence.”

A Statement For the West

The statement, made on Friday, appeared to be a direct challenge at the United States and its allies, who have repeatedly attempted to pressure New Delhi into scaling back its close links with Moscow. This comes comes after previous US actions, including additional import duties targeting New Delhi over its buying of Russian oil.

“Our nation is a trustworthy source of fuel and everything required for the advancement of India’s energy sector,” the Russian president said. “Russia is prepared to persist in ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of fuel for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

Modi, while not mentioning oil directly, echoed the focus by stating that “secure fuel supplies has been a robust and important pillar of the bilateral alliance.”

Defying US Interference

Before the talks, via a media interview, Putin had challenged US interference regarding India's energy purchases. He argued, “If the US can claim the privilege to buy our uranium, then why can't India claim the identical right?”

The visit represented his maiden visit to India after the beginning of the situation in Ukraine, and both sides engaged in a deliberate effort to demonstrate that the personal rapport between the two leaders remained intact.

An Unusual Welcome

In a unusual move, Modi personally greeted Putin upon his arrival. They exchanged a hearty embrace as close allies before having a closed-door supper together.

The Indian prime minister referred to India's partnership with Russia as “a guiding star” and noted it was “founded on shared respect and profound confidence.”

Reaffirming Defence and Economic Ties

Friday's talks resulted in multiple key agreements across defence and financial collaboration. A cornerstone agreement was the completion of an strategic roadmap that runs to 2030, which sets a goal to increase twofold bilateral trade to a hundred billion USD per year by the 2030 deadline.

Furthermore vowed to recalibrate their strategic cooperation. Although Russia continues to be India's largest source of arms, this role has declined in recent years as India works to broaden its procurement.

The official release stressed an agreement on the co-development of cutting-edge military systems, even if specific reference of deals for the fifth-generation aircraft were not made.

Overall, both nations reiterated that in the “present intricate, tense, and uncertain international environment, Russian-Indian ties continue to be strong to outside forces.”
