Radioactive Shrimp Crisis: Indonesia Confronts Contamination in Key Industrial Area

Extensive Contamination and Medical Examinations

Radiation tests showed at least twenty-two factories in the industrial zone were contaminated. The official team did not name the 21 other production facilities, but confirmed they would immediately receive cleanup procedures conducted by Indonesia's nuclear agency.

The environment minister stated that people residing in highly polluted areas would be moved until the site was decontaminated, adding that the well-being of the residents was the “top priority”.

Health officials additionally performed examinations on nearby employees and residents living near the industrial zone, finding nine people who tested positive for exposure to Caesium-137. They were referred to a medical facility before being allowed to return home.
