The gravest possible consequences of the climate emergency for the UK have been detailed by experts, encompassing a searing 4C jump in mean temperatures to a 6.5-foot rise in ocean levels. A separate possibility predicts a decline of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset farming and energy needs.
These consequences, a number of which are associated with critical climate thresholds, are viewed as low probability but possible. The team stated that these scenarios addressed a shortfall in risk assessment that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for worst-case results.
"The worst-case scenarios we have mapped should not be seen as certainties, but they are credible," commented the lead researcher who led the research. "Britain has been making preparations lacking the tools to test against worst-case scenarios. We've now supplied decision-makers what they need to get ready for future conditions they hope never happen, but can’t afford to ignore."
A second set of severe models details the potential extent of extreme weather between now and the year 2100. These show that temperatures could rocket in particular seasons by up to 6C above historical levels, while rainfall could be triple normal levels.
The chance of the catastrophic events happening remains uncertain due to uncertainty about what measures will be implemented to address global heating and how the climate system will behave. This analysis was described as similar to security threat evaluations or resilience checks for financial systems.
The severe models could be used to inform the building of long-term infrastructure, such as expanded cities, nuclear power stations and urban drainage systems. Awareness of these future hazards could also speed the drive to cut carbon pollution.
The analysis developed the worst-case scenarios using a combination of past data and records, digital projections and established principles. The scenarios exclude international cascading effects like the global food shortages and resource wars.
This work was commissioned as part of a national adaptation planning initiative. Independent analyses have warned that not enough attention was being allocated to high-consequence, low-probability risks.
An independent advisory body has said that the UK must "become resilient to moderate heating" and examine the dangers for four degrees. Past policy documents have been described as being "insufficient" by certain experts.
A government spokesperson noted: "Global warming is at the heart of our national priorities, both adapting for the future and becoming a low-carbon economy. It is essential that the UK is prepared for the impacts."
