Louisiana Local Accused of Aiding Hamas in October 7 Assault on Israel, US Authorities Allege

American federal attorneys have accused a Louisiana resident of taking part in the 7 October raid by Hamas on Israeli soil, according to recently revealed legal documents.

Mahmoud Amin Ya'qub al-Muhtadi, thirty-three, allegedly equipped him and joined a paramilitary group that fought alongside the organization in the 2023's attack that killed 1,195 Israelis, triggering two years of fighting that killed many additional individuals.

Twelve months after the attack, he allegedly journeyed to the US on a fraudulent entry permit and obtained status as a long-term resident.

The accused was indicted with supplying, trying to furnish or plotting to deliver assistance to a designated terror group and the fraud and misuse of a visa or additional papers.

Reported Role with Armed Group

The defendant was reportedly an member of the NRB, the armed branch of the DFLP, as stated in the complaint brought by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

He is charged of coordinating a "group of armed fighters" to cross into Israeli territory upon hearing about the raid and requested one man to "carry the rifles", court papers indicate.

Mr al-Muhtadi sent messages instructing other persons to bring a protective gear for another man and rounds, prosecutors allege.

Hours after the 7 October assault began, his phone pinged a signal tower near the kibbutz, the sight of a massacre, the records stated.

Legal Proceedings and Defense

The complaint indicated that Mr al-Muhtadi denied ever having been involved in acts of terror on his American visa application.

Upon arriving to the US, he resided in a handful of places before landing in Lafayette, Louisiana, where he worked in a nearby restaurant.

He was arrested on Thursday, the Justice Department announced.

During a court appearance in LA on the following day, he was questioned if he understood the allegations against him, an interpreter translated his response as "affirmative, but there are a lot of things mentioned here that are so incorrect, I'm innocent", as reported by sources.

The documents do not charge Mr al-Muhtadi of particular crimes or homicides. Federal prosecutors have in the past charged senior individuals of the group with the fatalities of US nationals on 7 October.
