Liverpool's Captain Concedes Team Faces Crisis, Questions Players on Accountability

Virgil van Dijk has delivered a scathing evaluation of Liverpool's woeful championship campaign, admitting the reigning champions are in disarray and letting down head coach Slot while doubting whether every player is owning up for the team’s slump.

“We had a great build-up to the match but in a fixture you are facing reality and the truth is we conceded a set piece in the opening period and a terrible goal at the start of the second half,” said Van Dijk. “We are certainly letting him down, but we’ve disappointed ourselves as well. Start with self-reflection and then you help each other, you help each other get out of this crisis because at the moment it is a mess – that's the reality.

Van Dijk typically addresses the media after a game as part of his role as Liverpool captain. This time was distinct, however. His voice was more forceful – audible enough that any player in the stadium corridors could listen in – and he expressed visible fury while urging the dressing room to respond. “You should be angry,” he insisted. “The key point for me is that each individual has to be accountable.” Asked whether that is happening, he replied: “It's unclear. But it's essential. It’s the main thing I expect the players to do. It’s not easy during difficult times but we must act if we aim to recover of this.”

Liverpool invested almost £450 million to strengthen a title-winning squad in the summer but have gone backwards, with new arrivals struggling to contribute so far. The captain insisted that Liverpool’s issues extend past the new recruits. “It’s tough for all involved,” he said. “My expectation is for everyone to take responsibility on the field. This is necessary in order to push each other, to improve collectively. If a teammate presses, you have to follow the press. It’s basic things but they're lacking enough.”

The Dutchman continued: “In the current term we don’t have any steady form, we concede excessive scores, we are being out-fought and all share the blame for it and I hope this is recognized. It's vital to take responsibility to reverse the situation and tempting to point fingers but you have to do it together. Past successes were collective and claimed the title and everyone was part of it, and when you go through a challenging phase you have to stick together and avoid blaming others.

“Show character and face the toughness and go again, again and again because surrendering is not an option then you are at the wrong place in my eyes, because Liverpool has been enduring many adversity over those years and we’ve consistently emerged of it. But it doesn’t mean it is easy, it’s tiring but there is no other way.”

Looking Ahead

The upcoming match in the Premier League is a trip to West Ham next weekend, after the Champions League fixture of the Dutch side in the European competition. Van Dijk said: “Wednesday is another game so what am I going to do, dwell on the loss? Certainly not, I'll go home and analyze how we can turn this around and I trust that is the collective focus as well.”
