The individual linked to the weekend's fatal shooting incident at Brown University reportedly died by suicide on Thursday night, according to law enforcement.
His body was discovered at a storage location on Thursday evening, according to information citing an official source. The same individual is also believed of the murder of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor at a residence in the Boston area.
“He ended his own life tonight,” announced the head of the Providence police department during a news briefing.
The police official identified the deceased man as Claudio Nevis Valenti, a 48-year-old student at Brown University.
This development comes after a significant police presence at a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire earlier on Thursday. Journalists on scene described seeing multiple armed officers entering the location.
The manhunt for the perpetrator had restarted on Monday after the attorney general's office announced that a person of interest on Sunday had been released. This development was acknowledged to be likely to cause fresh anxiety for the city residents.
City leadership emphasized that while the release was a setback, the overall case continued without interruption.
The young victims who lost their lives in the attack have been identified. They are Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama who was served as vice-president for a campus political group, and MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an international student in his first year who dreamed of becoming a neurosurgeon.
Authorities are expected to hold a news briefing to deliver further details on the circumstances of the death.
