A defense minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible security risks posed by Chinese cars, and personnel have been advised to avoid talking about secret information in all cars.
Security Advice for MoD Personnel
In a recent appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in China-made vehicles.
He explained that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that safety is a issue in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their car, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing risks of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Defence Background
This revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to disable buses and cause disruption to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
This wider security situation underscores the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official activities, including vehicle usage to communication habits.
