Educating an Infant to Grow into an 'English Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Cost?

Child education concept
The firm responsible for the advert states that what looks like "extravagance or oddity" is truly "deliberate investment in early education".

"Parents located in north London seeks an exceptional and experienced instructor to guide their smallest child on his early path to growing into an British gentleman."

When reading this post, you might readily miss the wording "beginning" as mere a turn of phrase.

However, it may be the most important aspect of this unusual employment listing, as it aims to find a mentor for a 12-month-old.

Numerous of applications have since been sent in since the anonymous family posted their search for the highly paid tutor, who has to be "an exceptional individual".

In recent few weeks, the post has attracted notice across the media, with many questioning why?

Progressive Approach

A tutoring expert, CEO and founder of an education consultancy, which is helping the family in their hunt, stated that despite initial skepticism, he found the idea "visionary", and "progressive".

When he consulted the family, he said they recognized the atypical nature of their request, and how young their son is.

Nevertheless, they stated that they "preferred not to postpone any longer" to hire a tutor, as they had held off until their older child was five, and by that age "cultural conditioning had already taken hold".

What exactly does the family refer to by "cultural bias"?

It's "everything", he replied. "The way you eat, the way you speak".

He stated the elder child had adopted "extremely delicate, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had assumed their cultural habits. The family explained to Adam they did not want the same situation to recur with their new baby.

The plan: To engage a English tutor, who must speak with RP, to guide the baby right from the beginning.

Tutoring discussion
Tutors International say the advert has started a wider debate about how parents regard schooling, advantage and the role of cultural environment in learning.

Subtle Influence

"A great deal of the learning at the start here is kind of osmotic," stated Adam.

It's through this osmosis that the family are aiming the child will acquire the English characteristics they aim to cultivate.

He explained the tutor needed to be someone who went to "prestigious academies – comparable categories of schools as the family hope to send their son to".

"The tutor simply needs to be the right kind of person, they'll be doing things they don't even know they're doing, simply by nature," he added.

Cost Not Relevant

The family explained to Adam the selected educator should preferably also have knowledge of or interest in riding, winter sports, the arts and music so as to inspire the child in a diverse set of passions.

Furthermore though, he stated the family wanted the tutor to register the child on a variety of classes so the child would be "pony-riding and picking up an instrument by the time they are around three years old".

In the family's view, helping their son become a "British gentleman" will lead to success and open doors.

"Taking into account the rights and wrongs of that, because it's certainly a class statement," he notes.

Yet, despite all this instruction in "English culture", might the child adopt what is termed cultural leaning from the multicultural family he is raised by anyway?

"Yes", answered he. "The family realize this could fail, but they've just taken the attitude of, 'why not attempt it and we'll proceed as soon as we can', because the expense of it is not a concern," he said.

Impractical

There are some in the education sector who share these concerns.

An education leader, CEO and founder of Blue Education, who supplies individual instructors, stated that "the process of embracing two identities, or indeed, discovering oneself, is something that must be grown into, not designed."

The expert explained that he had emigrated from Asia to the United Kingdom at the period of seven, and had been brought up understanding and living two backgrounds. He progressed to learn at Cambridge University.

The educator was the pioneer born in mainland China to be elected to the post of Finance Head of the university debating society.

"The notion that one individual can act as a embodiment of UK identity, someone who can in some way transfer the characteristics of a UK sophisticate to a one-year-old child, appears naive and unrealistic," he commented.

"Based on my background, employing a distinctly English tutor from infancy will will not instantly create the result they hope for.

"I did not have that kind of mentor, and however I have been privileged enough to live many of the situations they hope for their son."

He stated: "The fact is, cultural identity cannot be forced from the external environment; it must be chosen, and it must be internally driven."

Purchasing UK Culture

Certainly, UK identity is something Adam believes can be educated – and commercialized.

"In my view the reality that the global community holds us in this regard is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
