Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
