Countless Gather at First Israeli Burial Ceremony After Captive Remains Were Repatriated

While Michel Illouz carefully navigated through the crowds beneath the Mediterranean pines and palm trees at the cemetery in Ra'anana, a urban center located approximately 20 kilometers north of Tel Aviv, he thanked people to countless visitors as possible.

Previously he offered an open call to the Israeli public to join his family in honoring the memory of his twenty-six-year-old son, Guy, whose remains had been repatriated from Gaza on Monday.

Massive Turnout

Countless individuals heeded the request. They filled the roads, followed the hearse carrying his mortal coil, and gathered at the cemetery in such substantial amounts that the original plan to stage the ceremony indoors had to be discarded.

Rather, the event was held outdoors, set to the chorus of birdsong.

Important Moment

This signified the opening memorial service since the last two dozen captives came back from Gaza, together with multiple remains. Another more than twenty of the fallen captives remain missing, but at minimum this family now had a specific place to mourn and commemorate their son, as stated by close acquaintances.

Heartbreaking Narrative

Guy Illouz, a performer and recording specialist, had been struck from behind at the Nova concert event during the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Before the tragedy unfolded, he had called his father from a hiding place to express his love; to say goodbye. He was seized, and per those held with him, he subsequently passed away from his trauma due to medical neglect.

Family Perspective

A close acquaintance of the Illouz family, Michelle, in her fifth decade, stated that it had been vitally significant to them that the public gathered today. The Illouz household, comprising Guy's female relatives and male sibling, had practiced the mourning period, the extended period of bereavement, after discovering of his demise in December of the previous year. But now that Guy was at long last back with them, they desired "people around them again."

"It warms my heart that you attended," expressed Michel. "We don't take it for granted."

Parent's Homage

He addressed his son. "Beloved Guy," he uttered, using a term of endearment, "it's difficult for me to imagine the time to come without you. They snatched you from me – they murdered you – they kidnapped me and stole my identity and destroyed my spirit and feelings."

"I've been left hollow since that senseless shooting by those malicious militants when they caught you and instructed you to turn around, and then merely shot two gratuitous rounds into your back."

Ultimate Parting

"And here I am this morning, driving to Abu Kabir identification center to verify your remains and bid farewell. They unveiled the shroud, and the primary view I observed was that familiar expression, that positive outlook, that calm demeanor and nobility that so exemplified you."

"I reached out, tried to smell you, gently felt each part in your body. I observed you, I was by myself with you, and yes, I felt with absolute certainty that it was you. Yes, I know, Guy-shuk, that you've returned to us. You've rejoined your family's embrace, to all your close associates, and to the numerous individuals whose hearts your narrative impacted."

Familial Courage

In the initial segment of the ceremony, Illouz had concentrated completely on consoling his smaller offspring. He gently touched the locks of his female children, held his son, kissed his neck and maintained composure for them. But then his voice broke.

Treasured Recollections

"I will long for so much exploring alongside you through this nation, feeling you, enjoying your artistic creations, relaxing in mountainous areas and lighting the burner to make coffee the way only you knew how – 'Papa, do you see the coffee froth? You have to heat it slowly, let the lather develop, then heat it once more. Agitate the liquid with rotating movements' – and then your grin while enjoying the drink and your delight in every particular taste."

"Prior to my departure Abu Kabir today, I fulfilled my commitment. I gazed upon you, inhaled your essence one last time, and yes, I kissed you on the front of your head. I was able to see your beauty even in the condition in which you were repatriated."

Final Words

"My Guy-shuk, I love you so much, I treasure you. I will miss you every second and minute of my time. Rest now, my beloved son, repose after a passage of 24 months through unfamiliar realms to us. I hold you dear, my dear Guy, my cherished eldest child."
