California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he plans to determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.

"Yeah, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor stated when questioned about contemplating a presidential run after the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."

The governor's current term as governor concludes in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he noted that any choice is still years away.

"It's up to destiny," he added.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

Newsom has stepped forward as a high-profile opponent of the current federal leadership, employing his online platforms and championing a proposition that would boost the party's House seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This move has invited attacks from adversaries.

Controversy Over Funds

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a Sunday segment on a major news network. Duffy revealed a strategy to withhold government money from the state and warned suspending the authority to issue trucking licenses.

"I intend to cut $160m from California," he declared, following a recent deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized trucker that led to fatalities and injured individuals.

His administration highlighted that the U.S. government had approved the worker's status repeatedly, which enabled him to secure a CDL under national regulations.

The transportation secretary had earlier indicated he was withholding $40m from the state for not enforcing language proficiency rules for CDL holders.

Pointed Reply from the Team

"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, still doesn't understand national statutes," Newsom's office said in a last month's release countering the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: California commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate much lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."

Voter Sentiment and Political Future

A recently conducted study found that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate said that the governor should run for the White House in the next election cycle. In recent years, public support for the governor has increased to an mean of 33.5% from around 30%, while his negative ratings has fallen from an average of previous highs to 38.4%.

In previous months, the governor stated while traveling several swing states that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for 2028.

He mentioned his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.

"The idea that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the American people."
