Bolsonaro detained after being considered a risk of fleeing

The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in September and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of his "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader President Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
