Abigail Spanberger Establishes a Landmark as First Female Governor

Throughout 250 years, Virginia has seen 74 governors, all of them men. On Tuesday, Abigail Spanberger broke this longstanding tradition by securing the position as the state's inaugural woman leader in Virginia's history.

Centered Around Cost-of-Living Issues and Targeted Criticism

Ex- US congresswoman and CIA case officer won with a campaign that highlighted everyday expenses and strategically challenged Donald Trump's policies instead of the individual.

Background and Education

Hailing from in a New Jersey town on 7 August 1979, she relocated to a suburb of Richmond, Virginia at her early teens. Her father was an army veteran who subsequently worked in law enforcement; her mom was a healthcare professional and volunteer.

She enrolled in the Virginia's flagship university, obtaining a diploma in literary arts. Post-graduation, she had a short stint as a classroom instructor before pursuing a career in public service.

“I grew up believing that I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and I did,” Spanberger informed attendees at a event in the city of Norfolk recently.

Professional Path

At the Postal Service, she worked cases involving drugs, exploiters and financial criminals. She executed legal orders, often being the sole female on the operation squad. She then joined the CIA and focused on counter-terrorism cases, serving undercover and abroad.

Personal Crossroads

In that year, she and her spouse, an technical professional, considered their future. Residing on the west coast, they were considering another overseas assignment. They pulled out a globe and inquired of their oldest child, then in elementary school, where they should go. Virginia, she replied, because “all our loved ones lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger stated at her rally: “And so we decided to pivot from a path of service to country, to service to community because she was correct. All our relatives are in Virginia.”

Entry into Politics

Back in Virginia, she volunteered with a grassroots group, which combats firearm incidents, and started a youth group. In 2017, she resolved to run for Congress, which people told her was a “crazy endeavour” because no Democrat had won the seventh district in 50 years.

“But I saw what the president was doing with his authority and how he was pitting neighbour against neighbour. And I saw my member of Congress consistently work against the healthcare law. And I realized I had to do something. So for the record: I won.”

Moderate Stance

In the capital, she rapidly became part of the Blue Dog Coalition, a alliance of centrist and budget-conscious lawmakers. She prioritized lower-profile issues: expanding broadband to the countryside, combating narcotics trade and support for former troops.

She quickly established a reputation for working with Republicans and was consistently rated as the most cooperative member of the state's congressmembers. She was outspoken about messaging that she believed turned off independents, cautioning her party against partisan language that could be weaponised in contested districts.

Centrist Group

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and an ex-navy pilot, she was called a member of the “pragmatic group” in opposition to the progressive “squad” of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Run for Governor

In November 2023, she announced she would leave Congress for a fourth term and would rather campaign for Virginia's leadership in the next election.

Her campaign centred on ideas of civic duty, support for schools and infrastructure and defense of democratic institutions. Her intelligence experience gave her authority on national security issues and she spoke of public service as a calling instead of a career.

Election Victory

This helped her to counter Republican opponent her challenger's criticisms on social topics, notably the assertion that she is an extremist on individual freedoms and medical services for the LGBTQ+ community.

Spanberger, who consistently argued that local school districts should determine whether trans youth can participate in school athletics, cast her rival as the candidate more misaligned with the middle of the commonwealth's citizens.
